Slowing Down the Aging Process

Aging is a natural process. It happens to all of us, and there is nothing we can do about it. But, we can slow it down through a proper diet and taking certain supplements. There are creams in the market that claim to reverse the aging process or make one “look” younger. Yes, these creams and even injections do have an effect on the skin on a molecular level, but what would be the consequences? If you could avoid these chemical creams and injections, the better it would be for you.

The most contributing factor in accelerating the aging of the skin is sun exposure. Sun bathing dries the skin and causes loss of collagen which is a natural substance that keeps the skin plump, line free and lifted. The loss of collagen is inevitable as we grow older. Women lose about 1% of collagen a year, more than men. This explains why a woman of 50 compared to a man of the same age looks older. Sorry ladies. Not only we lose collagen with age, but also from environmental stresses like sun exposure, diet, polluted environment, excessive alcohol and even drugs.  You can get more helpful information here.

There are different types of collagen supplements on the market. Some are injected under the skin and others are creams. The substance that is injected under the wrinkled skin stimulates the body to produce collagens, but the effect wears off rather fast. The creams, on the other hand, contain collagens with molecules too large to be absorbed by the pours of the skin. In conclusion, there is no scientific evidence that they can help eliminate the signs of aging.

Another contributing factor is the formation of free radicals in the body. These free radicals are chemically active and are formed naturally which plays a role in the normal cellular process.  High concentrations of free radicals can damage all components of the cells like DNA, cell membranes and protein in the cells. Free radicals can be formed from radiation like from sun exposure, environmental toxins like cigarette smoke, metal or high-oxygen environment and in acidic pH of the blood.

Free radicals can be neutralized by antioxidants and be prevented from causing damage to your cells. Your body makes some antioxidants to neutralize free radicals; however, it is not sufficient when there are a lot of free radicals around; therefore, it relies on external sources of antioxidants which are found  in certain foods and supplements. You don’t want to end up like this. womens-338321__180
